Kangaroo Island - Part 1

Kangaroo Island, roughly 7 times the size of Singapore, is said to be a true wildlife sanctuary. Owing to its isolation from the mainland, the Island has suffered less from the impact of European settlement and retains more than half of its native ‘old-growth' vegetation - a vast area of some 2,250 square kilometres. With few people living here, it is paradise for wildlife consequently.

Getting between destinations in Australia needs fair bit of driving, can be lonely on the roads at times. But there are simple pleasure of sights on way too - like this straight road lined with trees that projects a tunnel feel.

Refreshing change of scenes approaching the sea front at Cape Jervis.

A break at a coastal park.

Finally - ferry point at Cape Jervis.

A little time to explore the area before our ferry set sail - lone house facing the ocean, a hermit's private paradise!

Camped at Brown Beach for a night on the island.

Lonely night sky.. only the moon to keep us company.

Brown Beach in the morning.. no other souls in sight.

A walk to the marshlands of The Meadows.

Patterns of dried mud bed fractured with cracks.

A visit to the Seal Bay Conservation Park.

Skeleton of a seal on display.

Part of skull bone of a juvenile sperm whale found on the island in 1983.

Whales do pass by these stormy coasts....

Spotting them is a real challenge!

Watch pelicans during feeding is more predictable. They congregate at the jetty each evening.

Gulls are waiting too.

Free for all.. feeding time! Still it's the fittest getting the lion share, law of the jungle!

To be continued... Part 2
